                                      Thursday, Sept. 6 -- Portland -- 21 miles
We biked a short distance to the Oregon Museum of Science and Industry and saw a National Geographic photography exhibit called "Simply Beautiful." Here's a 6-minute video featuring some of the photographers and photos. There's a book, too; and some of the photos are featured in the "Simply Beautiful" galleries here.
George showed us his favorite bike shop,
En Selle, and owner Jack Liskear
gave Rick some advice
on adjusting his brakes.

George and Lynne, on the waterfront, on the way back from Willamette Park.
George met us at the science museum
and led us on a waterfront ride. We had met George and his buddy Arthur a year earlier
on the Sierra Sampler bike trip.
They both live in Portland.

We stopped for an outdoor lunch at Aquariva.

Some intersections in the city have signals specifically for bicyclists.
We crossed back over the Hawthorne Bridge. George had to take off, and Rick and I continued to Mount Tabor Park.

Mount Tabor is a volcanic cinder cone, with a paved road winding up it, as well as several trails, through a forest of tall trees. It's about 600 feet high. You get a view of Mount Hood from one side, downtown Portland and the city's West Hills (above) from the other.
This calendar has nice Mount Tabor pictures.

Dinner was at Pok Pok, a Southeast Asian restaurant on Division Street.
