With a long line of cars and trucks
stacked up behind us on Route 145, we didn't mind waiting for the go-ahead
to use the one lane left open during construction. We let the cars go first,
and then we had the road to ourselves.

We had lunch at Sandy's Sunshine Kitchen in
Ridgway. We were leaving town
when we saw all the vintage cars. It was the
Colorado Grand, an annual rally
of sports and racing cars built before 1961.

A very gradual climb of about 10 miles brought us into
Ouray, the "Switzerland of America."
The last few miles, it started to rain. We checked in to the
Historic Western Hotel, built
in 1891, and explored the town on foot in a downpour.

Dinner was in the hotel saloon
("No dancing on tables with spurs").
The face painted on the barroom floor has been restored a couple of times.
The story is that the original artist was paid with beer.
